Devotion to Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos dates back to the 16th century. The image-a small statue of the Immaculate Conception made from corn-cane paste by indigenous artisans-was brought to the region by Franciscan missionaries to support the evangelization of the indigenous peoples in what is now Jalisco, Mexico. Relatively forgotten for years, tradition tells that in 1623 a family of acrobats arrived in the town of San Juan Bautista Mezquititlán, and one of their girls suffered a fatal accident when she fell onto daggers during a rehearsal. <p>A local faithful woman, named Ana Lucía, took the image of the Virgin and placed it upon the girl's body. After intense prayers, the girl revived, an event that was considered a miracle through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. From then on, the image began to receive pilgrims from many regions; in 1732 construction began on the present church, and in 1904 the devotion was confirmed with the canonical coronation of the image by decree of Pope Saint Pius X. </p><p><b>Prayers to Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos</b> is born from this living history of faith to offer a collection of prayers inspired by her devotion and by the tradition of miracles, pilgrimages, and gratitude.
